Tragic Death of Woman Due to Forced Female Genital Mutilation in Delta State

A young woman named Emeterhire has sadly died in Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, following a harrowing experience of being coerced into undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM) after complications during childbirth. This tragic incident highlights the ongoing issues surrounding harmful cultural practices and their devastating impact on women’s health.

Background of the Victim

Emeterhire, a resident of the Aniocha South Local Government area, had previously fled her village to escape the harmful tradition of FGM. Despite her attempts to avoid this cultural practice, she was allegedly forced to return to her village, where she was subjected to FGM against her will. Sources indicate that her mother, Erhuvwun, who had also undergone FGM in her youth, had urged her daughter to return home, fearing that without the village’s traditional blessings, her grandchild would be cursed.

Return to the Village

After years of building a new life in Asaba, where Emeterhire fell in love and was expecting her first child, she returned to her village as her due date approached. Unfortunately, she was unaware of the dangers she would face upon her return. When complications arose during her labor, village elders, who had long resented her for evading the FGM ritual, imposed the procedure she had escaped years earlier.

Forced Procedure

In a distressing turn of events, village elders allegedly forced Emeterhire to undergo FGM during the night while she was weak from childbirth. The procedure was performed without her consent, and due to her fragile state, she was unable to resist. Tragically, by dawn, Emeterhire succumbed to the trauma inflicted by both the childbirth and the mutilation, leaving behind a newborn child.

Outrage and Call for Justice

Emeterhire’s death has sparked widespread outrage, with human rights activists condemning the practice of FGM and demanding justice for the victim. Local advocates have emphasized that this incident is a tragic example of how harmful cultural practices continue to endanger the lives of women. They are calling for immediate action to protect women and girls from such customs that violate their rights.

A Mother’s Vow

In the wake of her daughter’s death, Erhuvwun has expressed her devastation and vowed to fight against FGM to ensure that her granddaughter does not face the same fate as her mother. She hopes that Emeterhire’s tragic story will serve as a turning point in the battle to eradicate FGM in Ogwashi-Uku and beyond.

The Need for Change

This heartbreaking incident sheds light on the urgent need for increased awareness and action to combat harmful traditional practices like FGM. As communities grapple with the complexities of cultural norms, it is vital to advocate for women’s rights and health, ensuring that no woman has to endure such violence in the name of tradition.
