Tonderai Mugabe Withdraws Inheritance Lawsuit Against Late President’s Estate

Tonderai Mugabe, a man who claimed to be the secret son of the late President Robert Mugabe, has withdrawn his inheritance lawsuit against the Mugabe estate. The case was dismissed by Justice Chitapi, who ruled that adopting the Mugabe surname did not grant legal status as a descendant.

Background of the Claim

Tonderai Mugabe alleged that he was born on April 20, 1977, at the Chimoio base in Mozambique during the liberation war. He claimed that his mother, Hilda Maeka, was romantically involved with the late President but kept his paternity a secret due to fear of Sally Mugabe, the former First Lady.

Legal Proceedings and Outcome

Tonderai approached the High Court seeking recognition as a rightful heir to the Mugabe estate, naming Bona Mugabe, the late leader’s daughter and executor of the estate, as the respondent. However, his case faced procedural hurdles, including missing the statutory six-week deadline to challenge the decision of the Master of the High Court. Justice Chitapi dismissed his reliance on using the Mugabe surname, stating that merely adopting a name does not confer legal status as a descendant. Realizing the inevitability of defeat, Tonderai withdrew the case and agreed to pay legal costs. The withdrawal of Tonderai Mugabe’s inheritance lawsuit marks the end of a legal challenge to the Mugabe estate. The court’s decision underscores the importance of legal evidence and procedural adherence in inheritance claims.
