Tiwa Savage’s Inspiration Behind Producing ‘Water and Garri’

Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has revealed the inspiration behind her debut film, ‘Water and Garri’. At 44 years old, Savage decided to produce the movie to narrate African stories from a female perspective.

A New Perspective on African Narratives

In an interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo on the latest episode of African Voices Changemakers, Savage emphasized the importance of presenting Africa through a female lens. She said, “I think it is important for people to see Africa and see film being interpreted from a female point of view as well.”

Countering Negative Stereotypes

Savage hopes that ‘Water and Garri’ will attract people to Africa in a new light. “I love the story and I think it is gonna draw a lot of people back to Africa in a different way,” she stated. She also pointed out the negative portrayal of Africa over the years and noted the parallel rise of Afrobeats and African cinema. “So, it is very very important for us to tell our own story,” she added.
