Former Nigerian Senator Shehu Sani has sent a clear and bold message to the country’s political landscape, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027 will be “a done deal” if opposition parties continue to remain divided. Speaking during a recent interview, Sani emphasized that the only realistic way to challenge the ruling party is through a strong and united coalition of opposition forces.
The Power of Unity
According to Sani, Nigerian politics is not just about popularity or performance , it’s largely influenced by numbers, strategy, and unity. He warned that if opposition parties such as the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP), and other smaller political groups continue to go their separate ways, they will only weaken themselves and allow the All Progressives Congress (APC) to remain in power by default.
Tinubu’s Advantage
President Tinubu, who came into office in 2023 after a tightly contested election, still holds significant political influence across the country. With the backing of the APC’s political machinery, loyal governors, and a well-established network, Sani believes Tinubu stands a strong chance of returning to office , especially if the opposition fails to offer a united front.
A Warning, Not a Prediction
Shehu Sani clarified that his statement was not an endorsement of Tinubu but a realistic observation based on current political trends. “This is not about who I support,” he said. “It’s about the facts on the ground. If the opposition continues to act separately, they are only handing the next election to Tinubu on a silver platter.”
Lessons from 2023
Many Nigerians still remember the 2023 general elections, where the opposition was fragmented, with multiple candidates fighting for similar voter bases. That division, according to political analysts, played a major role in helping Tinubu secure victory. Sani believes that repeating the same mistake in 2027 would only bring the same result.
Can the Opposition Learn?
The big question now is whether opposition leaders can put their differences aside and work together for the greater good. This would involve compromise, shared vision, and the maturity to focus on national interest rather than personal ambition. Sani’s comments have added pressure on party leaders to rethink their strategies ahead of the next election cycle.
Hope for a Competitive Democracy
Despite the warning, Shehu Sani remains hopeful. He believes Nigeria’s democracy thrives when there is healthy competition and real choices for the people. His advice is a call to action for those who truly want change, urging them to plan early, unite, and avoid the mistakes of the past.
