“I probably won’t be at Brentford forever,” Thomas Frank told BBC Sport in January when asked about his ambitions. “I will maybe walk into another club.”
That club could be Tottenham Hotspur, who finished 17th in the Premier Leagueseven places below Brentford—but will play in the Champions League next season after winning the Europa League.
Spurs have closed the door on the Ange Postecoglou era and are now bidding to replace him with the Dane who established Brentford as a Premier League mainstay after winning promotion from the Championship in 2021.
Frank, 51, is the second-longest-serving current manager in the Premier League, behind only Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola.
“It is just a question of time” – Guardiola’s Endorsement
Last September, when asked if he was surprised that Frank—appointed by Brentford in 2018—had not yet been offered a bigger job, six-time Premier League-winning boss Guardiola said:
“It is just a question of time.”
Frank, who never played professionally, has nevertheless overseen 152 Premier League games, winning 54, losing 60, and accumulating 200 points from a possible 456.
Among the 54 managers to have taken charge of 150+ Premier League games, Frank ranks 29th for points per game (1.32) a respectable record for a club of Brentford’s stature.
Transfer Market Approach: Frugal Yet Effective
During his tenure at Brentford, Frank has:
- Spent £254m on players
- Received £183m in sales
- Net spend of just £71m
In contrast, Tottenham have spent £961m on transfers since 2016-17 (FootballTransfer.com), highlighting the vast difference in resources between the two clubs.
Frank vs. Postecoglou: A Study in Contrasts
Frank has been described as the “opposite of Postecoglou” due to his pragmatism and adaptability. While Postecoglou’s philosophy is rooted in attacking, possession-based football, Frank has shown he can adjust tactics based on opposition and squad limitations.
If appointed, Frank would become Tottenham’s fourth permanent manager since June 2021:
- Nuno Espírito Santo – lasted just 4 months
- Antonio Conte – 16 months of turbulence
- Ange Postecoglou – 2 years, delivered a trophy (Europa League), but deemed not enough
The Pressure of Managing Tottenham
Chris Sutton, a Premier League winner with Blackburn in 1994-95, told BBC Sport:
“There’s much more pressure at Tottenham than at Brentford because of the expectation—and the manager has to handle that.”
Tottenham’s fanbase demands success, attractive football, and trophies—a far cry from Brentford’s more modest ambitions of consolidation and gradual progress.
Would Frank Succeed at Spurs?
Pros:
✅ Proven Premier League experience – Knows the league inside out.
✅ Man-management skills – Got the best out of Ivan Toney, Bryan Mbeumo, and others.
✅ Adaptability – Can switch between defensive solidity and attacking play.
✅ Stability – Longevity at Brentford shows he can build projects.
Cons:
❌ No experience managing a ‘big six’ club – Handling egos and media scrutiny is different.
❌ Tottenham’s chaotic structure – Will Daniel Levy back him properly?
❌ Higher expectations – Brentford’s overachieving won’t be enough at Spurs.
Final Verdict: A Calculated Risk
Thomas Frank is a highly respected coach with a track record of maximizing limited resources. However, Tottenham’s volatile environment and relentless demand for instant success make this a risky move for both parties.
If given time and backing, Frank could stabilize Spurs and build a competitive side. But in an era where patience is scarce, his appointment could either be a masterstroke or another short-lived experiment.
One thing is certain: Tottenham need a long-term vision and Frank might just be the man to deliver it.
