Veteran Nollywood actress and outspoken public figure, Kate Henshaw, has added her voice to the ongoing national debate on electricity tariffs in Nigeria. In a fiery social media post, she described the recently introduced electricity banding system as a “huge fraud,” sparking fresh conversation about the fairness, transparency, and practicality of the country’s power distribution strategy.
What is Electricity Banding?
The electricity banding system was introduced by Nigerian electricity regulators to categorize power supply into different “bands” — Band A through E — with Band A supposedly receiving the most stable supply (20+ hours daily), and Band E the least (0–4 hours daily). The idea is that those who receive more power will pay higher tariffs.
But in practice, many Nigerians have complained that they are being charged higher rates even when they do not enjoy consistent power supply — raising concerns about exploitation and lack of accountability.
Kate Henshaw Speaks Her Mind
Kate Henshaw, never one to shy away from national issues, took to her social media page to express her frustration. She wrote:
“This banding on electricity is a huge fraud! You say I belong to Band A but I don’t even get up to 6 hours of light a day. Yet my bills are as high as ever. What sort of madness is this?”
Her post resonated deeply with thousands of Nigerians facing similar experiences — people who pay premium rates but get little to no electricity in return.
Nigerians Echo Her Sentiments
Following her statement, many Nigerians flooded her comment section and other online forums to share their own struggles with the electricity banding system. Most agreed with her, describing the classification as deceptive and unfair.
Some pointed out that DisCos (electricity distribution companies) arbitrarily assign bands without proper justification or infrastructure to support the level of service being promised.
Call for Accountability
Kate’s bold criticism has reignited calls for the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to revisit the policy. Many are demanding transparency in how bands are assigned and whether the service levels are actually being met.
Critics argue that until the power sector is truly fixed — with stable supply and honest billing — such classifications only serve as tools to overcharge citizens without delivering real value.
More than Just Acting
Kate Henshaw has long shown she’s more than a screen star — she’s also a strong voice for justice and accountability in Nigeria. Whether it’s speaking out against poor governance, gender violence, or infrastructure failures, she continues to use her platform to drive meaningful conversations.
A Broken System Demands Fixing
Kate Henshaw’s statement is not just a rant — it’s a reflection of widespread frustration among Nigerians. Her voice adds weight to the public’s demand for fairness, transparency, and real change in the power sector. As citizens continue to speak up, the question remains: Will those in charge finally listen?
