TB Joshua: BBC Exposes Decades of Alleged Abuse and Torture in Megachurch Leader’s Compound

The BBC’s Africa Eye investigation has uncovered extensive evidence of abuse and torture allegedly perpetrated by the late TB Joshua, founder of the Synagogue Church of All Nations (Scoan), one of the world’s largest Christian evangelical churches. The shocking revelations span nearly two decades and include accounts of rape, forced abortions, child abuse, and faked “miracle healings.”

The Allegations Unveiled

Dozens of former Scoan members, including five from the UK, have come forward, recounting horrifying instances of physical violence, torture, and sexual assault allegedly orchestrated by TB Joshua. The megachurch did not respond to these allegations but denied any previous claims against its late founder.

TB Joshua’s Charismatic Rise and Global Influence

TB Joshua, who passed away in 2021, was a charismatic preacher and televangelist with a massive global following. The BBC investigation reveals eyewitness accounts of various forms of abuse, including child abuse, people being whipped and chained, and women claiming repeated sexual assault and forced abortions.

Inside the Maze-Like Compound

Victims, referred to as “disciples,” spent years inside Joshua’s compound, with some comparing their experiences to being in a cult. A British woman, Rae, shared her traumatic ordeal, stating she attempted suicide multiple times due to severe abuse, including sexual assault and solitary confinement. More than 25 former disciples from various countries corroborated these stories.

Miracle Healings Exposed as Deception

The investigation also exposes how TB Joshua allegedly faked “miracle healings” that were broadcast to millions worldwide. Multiple firsthand accounts detail the manipulation behind these supposed miraculous events.

International Pilgrimages and Silence Breaking

Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, tens of thousands of pilgrims from around the world visited Scoan, and at least 150 lived with Joshua as disciples. Former members, including victims from the UK, spoke out about their traumatic experiences, comparing the compound to hell.

TB Joshua’s Controversies and Legacy

Despite controversies during his lifetime, including a 2014 incident where a guesthouse for church pilgrims collapsed, killing over 100 people, TB Joshua was hailed as one of Africa’s most influential pastors. The BBC’s investigation, conducted with openDemocracy, marks the first time multiple former insiders have spoken on the record about the alleged abuse.

Silencing Attempts and Detentions

Former witnesses claim they faced physical attacks and threats after attempting to raise alarm, including one case where a BBC crew was fired upon by the church’s security. The victims have reportedly spent years trying to expose the abuse.

Global Impact and Ongoing Concerns

Four British citizens who spoke to the BBC say they reported the abuse to UK authorities, with no further action taken. Scoan, now led by Joshua’s widow, Evelyn, continues to thrive. Calls for a thorough investigation into the megachurch’s operations persist, with former members hoping for justice and the prevention of further abuses.
