The tanker, with registration number T20 146 LA, was fully loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and caught fire after a collision with a Toyota Sienna space bus near the Imani roundabout in Maitama. The impact of the collision caused the tanker to burst into flames, with eyewitnesses describing the sight of large flames and thick smoke rising into the sky.

The explosion caused panic among motorists and pedestrians, leading many to abandon their vehicles on the busy road in a desperate attempt to flee the scene. The fire resulted in significant traffic gridlock, particularly on routes connected to the Farmers Market, Nicon Hilton Hotel, MTN office, and Chicken House.

Three individuals, identified as Idris Mohammed, Suleiman Gimba, and Adamu Isiayku, sustained injuries in the incident.
