Tragic Incident Strikes South African Troops

In a tragic turn of events, the South African military announced on Thursday that two of its soldiers lost their lives, with three others wounded, in a mortar bomb attack within a military base in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The incident occurred amidst South Africa’s efforts to assist in combating armed groups in the volatile eastern region of Congo.

Mission Details

South Africa recently pledged to deploy 2,900 troops as part of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) force tasked with supporting Congo’s security operations. The aim is to address the worsening security situation in the eastern part of the country.

Fatal Attack

According to a statement from the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), a mortar bomb struck inside one of the military bases housing South African troops on Wednesday. The explosion resulted in the tragic loss of two soldiers, while three others sustained injuries. The wounded soldiers received immediate medical attention at a hospital in Goma, the nearest city.
