Solve Leadership Issues in Labour Party Before Dreaming of Presidency — Akpabio Tells Peter Obi

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called on former presidential candidate Peter Obi to focus on resolving the internal leadership crisis within the Labour Party (LP) before thinking of contesting again for Nigeria’s highest office. Akpabio made the remark in reaction to ongoing controversies and infighting within the Labour Party over its national leadership structure.

Labour Party’s Internal Crisis

The Labour Party has been facing a series of internal disputes, with multiple factions claiming legitimacy over the party’s leadership. These divisions have raised concerns among supporters about the party’s ability to provide a united front in future elections. The crisis has led to court cases, counter-conventions, and public confusion over who the real leaders are.

Akpabio’s Advice to Obi

Speaking during a political engagement, Akpabio stated that anyone aspiring to lead Nigeria must first show they can unite and manage their own party. He said it would be unrealistic for Peter Obi to seek the presidency in 2027 if the Labour Party cannot resolve its internal conflicts.

He added, “Charity begins at home. If you cannot bring order to your own party, how do you expect to manage a diverse country like Nigeria?”

Political Reactions

Akpabio’s comments have drawn mixed reactions from political observers and party loyalists. Some agreed that internal party stability is a necessary foundation for national leadership, while others saw the remarks as politically motivated and dismissive of Peter Obi’s growing popularity among Nigerian youths.

Obi Yet to Respond

As of now, Peter Obi has not officially responded to Akpabio’s comments. However, he has previously emphasized that he is focused on good governance, transparency, and the future of Nigeria, regardless of political distractions. Supporters of Obi continue to argue that the Labour Party remains the most viable alternative to the two major parties in Nigeria.

Bigger Picture Ahead of 2027

With the 2027 general elections drawing closer, political figures are already laying the groundwork for potential campaigns. Akpabio’s statement could be seen as an early sign of the political tensions and rivalries expected in the build-up to the elections. As parties prepare, unity and leadership will be key issues in how voters assess candidates.
