Sokoto Government Allocates N95.4 Million for Mosque Maintenance

The Sokoto State Government has released N95.4 million for the maintenance of Juma’at mosques across the state. The disbursement, which was announced at the Sultan Muhammadu Maccido Institute for Qur’anic and General Studies, is part of the state’s efforts to support religious activities and ensure that mosques remain conducive for worship.

Fund Distribution Across 87 Mosques

The funds were allocated to 87 Juma’at mosques, categorized into three tiers based on the amount received. Twenty mosques were granted N500,000 each, 17 mosques received N400,000 each, and 50 mosques were allocated N300,000 each. These payments cover the months of August, September, and October but had been delayed due to some mosques not having active bank accounts.

Alignment with Government Agenda

Governor Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto, represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Bello Goronyo, stated that this initiative aligns with the administration’s 9-point agenda, which prioritizes the promotion of religious activities. The state is committed to ensuring that mosques are well-maintained and serve as a comfortable space for worshippers.

Sultan’s Praise and Call for Accountability

Sultan Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar praised the state government for the initiative and encouraged other states to follow suit. He also urged mosque committees to use the funds responsibly, reminding them of their duty to manage the resources carefully and accountably, as they are ultimately answerable to God.

Ongoing Mosque Construction Projects

In addition to maintaining existing mosques, the Sokoto State Government is constructing over 35 new mosques across the state’s 23 local government areas. The Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Dr. Jabir Maihula, emphasized the importance of ensuring that these mosques remain conducive for worship and urged mosque committees to take responsibility for their upkeep.

Strengthening Religious Infrastructure

The release of these funds underscores Sokoto State’s dedication to supporting religious infrastructure and promoting the welfare of worshippers. As part of the state’s broader religious agenda, these efforts aim to strengthen the role of mosques in community life and ensure they remain well-maintained spaces for worship.
