Social Media Impact: Meta and TikTok Face Increased Content Restrictions in Malaysia

Meta (Facebook) and TikTok have reported record content restrictions in Malaysia, reflecting heightened government requests. Between January and June 2023, Meta restricted over 3,100 pages/posts, six times higher than the previous period. TikTok received 340 government requests to remove or restrict content, triple the numbers from the second half of 2022. The Malaysian government cites a surge in harmful content, leading to increased scrutiny, while free speech advocates express concerns over potential stifling of legitimate expression.
