It turns out Kristen Stewart and Dylan Meyer were always meant to be.
Not just because Meyer helped pull the Twilight alum out of her metaphorical vampire phase—but because she completely transformed Stewart’s life.
“When she moved into this house,” Stewart shared with Rolling Stone in 2024, referencing their Los Angeles home in the hills, “I had no curtains, three forks, and I never drank coffee, and I was like, ‘I don’t sleep.’ She’s like, ‘In the morning you drink coffee and you work, and you’re alive, and you’re awake, and then at night you close the curtains.’ In retrospect, it was so obvious.”
Meyer didn’t just bring routine—she brought light into every corner of Stewart’s world.
They first met in 2014 on the set of American Ultra, and the spark was immediate. “In a way where you aren’t sure if you want to f–k or be like, ‘Dude, let’s think of a handshake,'” Stewart recalled.
But at the time, she wasn’t ready. Having just wrapped up the five-film Twilight Saga in 2012, and still navigating the fallout of her public relationship with Robert Pattinson—which ended in 2013—Stewart was in a transitional period.
It wasn’t until she started dating women that she even began to feel somewhat at ease opening up about her personal life.
“When I was dating a guy I was hiding everything that I did because everything personal felt like it was immediately trivialized, so I didn’t like it,” she told Elle UK in 2016. “We were turned into these characters and placed into this ridiculous comic book, and I was like, ‘That’s mine. You’re making my relationship something that it’s not.’ I didn’t like that.”
Being with a woman shifted everything:
“I was like, ‘Actually, to hide this provides the implication that I’m not down with it or I’m ashamed of it, so I had to alter how I approached being in public,'” Stewart explained. “It opened my life up and I’m so much happier.”
She added, “I think also right now I’m just really in love with my girlfriend. We’ve broken up a couple of times and gotten back together, and this time I was like, ‘Finally, I can feel again.'”
At that time, Stewart was dating visual effects producer Alicia Cargile. In between, she was also linked to French singer Soko.
In 2017, she told Harper’s Bazaar UK that she was “definitely” open to dating men again:
“I want to try everything. If I have grilled cheese once I’m like, ‘That was cool, what’s next?'”
Still, her approach to relationships has always been genuine.
“I’ve been deeply in love with everyone I’ve dated. Did you think I was faking it?” she said. “I’ve always really embraced a duality. And really, truly, believed in it and never felt confused or struggling. I just didn’t like getting made fun of.”
And though she quipped on Saturday Night Live in 2017 that she was “like, so gay,” it was more a well-timed jab at the 45th U.S. President—who had tweeted about her and Pattinson—than a coming-out declaration.
“Honestly, I think it was just funny,” she told E! News, later recognizing the deeper impact.
“It wasn’t like, ‘Let’s do this thing that’s going to be so important,'” Stewart said. “But also, yeah, I’m so utterly proud that I’ve had so many people be like, ‘Thank you,’ and I’m like, ‘No, thank you.’ It’s kind of mutual, full circle.”
In 2019, after her split from Stella Maxwell, Stewart reconnected with Meyer at a mutual friend’s birthday party.
“I did get really lucky to re-meet someone that I was like—I was so ill-equipped, and now I am, like, going to make this happen,” she told Drew Barrymore in March 2024.
As for why they hadn’t reunited sooner? Meyer had reached out via email over the years, but Stewart never saw them.
“It was my fault for sure,” she told Rolling Stone. “But then I very much made this happen. I was intense, because I was just positive.”
When they finally locked eyes again, Stewart recalled to Howard Stern in 2019, “I was like, ‘Where have you been and how have I not known you?’”
Two weeks later, Stewart told Meyer she was in love with her—right there in a dive bar.
“It was, like, really late and we were in some s–ty bar,” she remembered. “And her friends were there or whatever, and they, like, walked out, and I was just like, ‘Oh man, I’m so f–king in love with you.’ Done.”
She added, “When you know, you know… There is nothing like feeling sure about anything, because we don’t know anything. And that is the only thing you can feel like you know, is that if you’re in love with someone.”
Though Stewart said she “couldn’t f–king wait” to propose, it was Meyer who popped the question.
“We’re marrying, we’re totally gonna do it,” Stewart said on Howard Stern in November 2021. “I wanted to be proposed to, so I think I very distinctly carved out what I wanted and she nailed it. We’re marrying, it’s happening.”
They planned to wait at least a year, wanting zero COVID restrictions on their big day.
“The food is the biggest deal,” Stewart said. “I don’t care about flowers and s–t like that. The food needs to be on point.”
As for her look?
“I want to wear the best pair of Levi’s ever and, like, an old T-shirt that has a tuxedo printed on it, but like cut-off and barefoot,” she said. “I want to get married in, like, Topanga. I want to be chilling. I want it to be very homey. I want to see her laugh hysterically when she sees me in, like, a faux tuxedo T-shirt.”
Though they haven’t said “I do” just yet—at least not publicly—the couple has certainly built a life together.
“We’re both, like, really casual people,” Stewart said on the Not Skinny but Not Fat podcast in March 2024. “And so we did this sweeping traditional thing where we were like, ‘Marry me.’ ‘You marry me.’ And then we just never, like, planned a wedding because we were like, ‘We kind of did it.’ But we’ll do it. I think we have a very loose plan, which is appropriate to us.”
Professionally, they’re partners too. Along with Meyer’s best friend Maggie McLean, they founded Nevermind Pictures.
Their first film? The Chronology of Water, which Stewart directed in Latvia. Meyer, meanwhile, is gearing up to make her own directorial debut with The Wrong Girls, starring Stewart and Seth Rogen.
“Took 13 years to get here but this is in fact the coolest day of my freakin’ life,” Meyer, 37, wrote on Instagram when the film was announced in February 2024.
While Stewart keeps her social media private, Meyer shares glimpses into their life—photos with their dog, their cat, their travels, their pool games, and adorable tributes like, “Happy valentines to my #1 crush, the hottest cat mom in the game. I am just so, so into you.”
When it comes to starting a family, Stewart isn’t ruling it out.
“I don’t know what my family’s going to look like, but there’s no f–king way that I don’t start acquiring kids,” she told Rolling Stone. “And also, ideally at some point soon I go, ‘I want to have a kid.’ I really want that to happen.”
They’ve already taken proactive steps.
“We’ve done really annoying things like freeze our eggs and stuff,” Stewart said on Not Skinny but Not Fat. “So, like, if we want to we can. Keeping that open.”
While past relationships may have struggled under the weight of her creative intensity, that’s no longer the case.
“I found the right person because I can be so obsessive about what I do,” she shared. “And luckily my girlfriend, my partner, we are into the same s–t. We have taken the things that we’re spending our time on and interlocked them, and we’re so much f–king smarter and stronger together. And you’re just like, ‘F–k, that is the best.'”
