In a powerful show of political dominance, Singapore’s long-reigning People’s Action Party (PAP) has once again secured a commanding victory in the country’s general election, reaffirming its 66-year grip on power. The PAP clinched 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats, holding off a spirited challenge from the opposition Workers’ Party (WP), which retained its 10-seat stronghold.
The high-stakes vote marked the first major political test for newly appointed Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, who took over from Lee Hsien Loong last year. Campaigning on a message of steady leadership and fresh energy, Wong sought to reassure voters amid growing unease over rising living costs and a tight housing market in one of the world’s most expensive cities.

Although the outcome largely mirrored expectations, analysts say the significance lies in the PAP’s ability to preserve its overwhelming majority — particularly under new leadership — and the WP’s resilience in maintaining its unprecedented gains from the 2020 election.
“This wasn’t just about winning — it was about the scale of victory,” noted Mustafa Izzuddin, a political analyst at the National University of Singapore. “The margins across most constituencies were striking. It’s a solid endorsement of Prime Minister Wong’s leadership at this early stage.”
The PAP’s enduring success is often attributed to its extensive institutional network, strong governance record, and ability to deliver economic stability. Still, the election also revealed signs of a slow, but perceptible, shift in political attitudes — especially among younger voters — as the WP continues to build credibility and name recognition.

The government had warned that opposition gains could complicate Singapore’s position in an increasingly unstable global landscape, citing challenges such as US-China tensions and economic uncertainty. But for now, the PAP’s message of continuity appears to have resonated with the electorate.
While the political landscape in Singapore remains tightly controlled, this election underscores a maturing democracy where opposition voices are gaining more staying power — even if the reins of power are still firmly in PAP hands.
