The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that Simon Ekpa, a well-known pro-Biafra agitator, will not be repatriated to Nigeria until he has fully answered legal cases against him in Finland, where he currently resides. The clarification came amid growing calls from the public for Ekpa to be brought back to face charges over his alleged role in inciting violence and unrest in the South-East region of Nigeria.
Why Simon Ekpa Is in the Spotlight
Simon Ekpa, a self-acclaimed disciple of the late Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu, has consistently made headlines for issuing sit-at-home orders and controversial online broadcasts. These directives, often enforced violently, have disrupted daily life in parts of the South-East and caused economic and human losses. His influence, even while based in Finland, has triggered security concerns for the Nigerian government.
Legal Process in Finland Comes First
According to the Nigerian government, diplomatic and legal rules must be followed in dealing with citizens of other countries — especially those with ongoing legal proceedings in their host nations. Ekpa is currently under investigation in Finland for possible violations of local and international laws, and Finnish authorities are handling his case.
Until those legal matters are concluded, Finland cannot legally release him for extradition or deportation. The Nigerian government stated that it is closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with Finnish authorities.
International Law Must Be Respected
The federal government emphasized the importance of respecting international legal frameworks. Repatriation or extradition is not automatic — it requires a formal process, often involving bilateral agreements, court rulings, and human rights considerations. Nigeria cannot forcefully bring Ekpa home without violating international law and the sovereignty of another country.
Growing Pressure from Nigerians
Many Nigerians have expressed frustration over Simon Ekpa’s continued influence, particularly on social media platforms. Some accuse him of fueling violence while living comfortably abroad. However, government officials have urged citizens to be patient and trust in diplomatic and legal procedures.
What Happens Next?
For now, Nigeria is waiting for Finland’s legal system to complete its investigation and trials related to Ekpa. If he is found guilty, he will serve his sentence there. If cleared, Nigeria could then begin formal extradition procedures to bring him home to face any pending charges locally.
