Simon Ekpa to Be Extradited to Nigeria for Trial – DSS Informs Court!

On Friday, May 2, the Department of State Services (DSS) informed the Federal High Court in Abuja that Simon Ekpa, an ally of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, will soon be extradited to Nigeria to face prosecution.

This disclosure was made by a DSS operative identified as PWAAA during the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu. The operative testified that Ekpa would be brought back to Nigeria to stand trial over his alleged support for Kanu’s pro-Biafra agitation.

During cross-examination by Kanu’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi (SAN), the DSS officer acknowledged that his awareness of other individuals supporting Kanu came solely from media and social media sources. He admitted that, apart from Kanu, he was not aware of anyone else currently being prosecuted in connection with the Biafra agitation.

The witness further stated that he could not recall Kanu ever making public remarks about corruption, youth unemployment, or issuing apologies to the President and Igbo leaders. He also claimed no recollection of Kanu describing IPOB as a peaceful, voluntary organization. While acknowledging the widespread killings across the North and other regions, the operative said he could not directly link the violence to self-determination movements. However, he emphasized that the government is making efforts to address the situation.

Giving a background on Kanu’s arrest in Lagos in 2015, the DSS operative testified that Kanu was apprehended at a hotel and that all items recovered at the time belonged to him. He noted that no weapons or evidence of public disturbance were found on a woman who was arrested alongside Kanu. While the recovered items were not inherently incriminating, the witness argued that their intended use could raise concerns. He clarified that it was not his duty to analyze the items or involve others in confronting Kanu. He also confirmed that Kanu’s statement was taken without the presence of legal counsel.

The court admitted a comprehensive list of items recovered from Kanu’s hotel room as evidence. These included laptops, modems, mobile phones, microphones, audio recorders, personal belongings such as shoes, perfumes, wristwatches, and bank cards. Also presented were IPOB-related documents, as well as both Nigerian and British passports bearing Kanu’s full name.
