Seven Gauteng Teen Girls Arrested After Viral Bullying Video Sparks Outrage

Seven teenage girls from Johannesburg, South Africa, have been arrested and charged with common assault following the circulation of a disturbing video showing them allegedly bullying a fellow student. The incident, which occurred on May 10, 2025, in Yeoville, has ignited widespread concern about bullying and violence among school-aged children.

The Incident Captured on Video

In the widely shared video, a 14-year-old girl is seen sitting on a bed, surrounded by several other girls. After a brief exchange, one of the girls slaps the seated girl, who then covers her face with her hands. The footage has caused public outrage, with many calling for immediate action against the perpetrators.

Legal Proceedings and Charges

The seven girls, aged between 13 and 14, were arrested and released into the custody of their parents, as per the Child Justice Act. They appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on May 19 for a Preliminary Inquiry (PLI), which is conducted within 48 hours of a minor’s arrest to assess their personal circumstances and the factors leading to the alleged offense. The case has been postponed to May 21 for the finalization of the PLI, during which assessments by probation officers will be considered.

School and Educational Department Response

The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has confirmed that the accused students attend Bedfordview High School, Kensington High School, Queens High School, and Phoenix College. The victim is a learner at Bedfordview High School. All seven girls have been suspended from their respective schools pending internal investigations. The GDE has also stated that psycho-social support will be provided to all affected learners, including the victim.

Public Reaction and Broader Implications

The incident has sparked a broader conversation about bullying and violence in schools. Many community members and organizations are calling for increased measures to address and prevent such behavior among students. The case underscores the importance of creating safe and supportive educational environments for all learners.
