Saudi Arabia Declares June 16 as Eid al-Adha

Saudi Arabia has announced the sighting of the Dhul Hijjah crescent, signaling the beginning of the 12th Islamic month. The announcement was made on Thursday, confirming the commencement of the new month.

Start of the Holy Month

As a result of this sighting, tomorrow will mark the beginning of the holy month of Dhul Hijjah. This month holds significant importance in the Islamic calendar, leading up to the Hajj pilgrimage and the celebration of Eid al-Adha.

Hajj Pilgrimage Dates

The Hajj pilgrimage for the year 1445 AH (2024) will begin on Friday, June 14. Pilgrims will gather for the day of Arafah on Saturday, June 15. The day of Arafah is a pivotal moment in the Hajj rituals, observed by millions of Muslims worldwide.

Eid al-Adha Celebration

With these developments, the biggest Muslim festival, Eid al-Adha, will be observed on Sunday, June 16, 2024. Eid al-Adha, also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice,” is celebrated on the 10th of Dhu al-Hijjah. This festival commemorates the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) to sacrifice his son in obedience to God’s command.

Call for Crescent Sighting

Saudi Arabia’s Supreme Court had on Wednesday called on all Muslims across the Kingdom to participate in the sighting of the crescent moon of the month of Dhu al-Hijjah. This collective effort helps determine the official start of the new month and the exact date of the festival.

 Significance of Eid al-Adha

Eid al-Adha is the second major Islamic festival, celebrated by Muslims around the world after Eid al-Fitr. It is a time for prayer, feasting, charity, and performing the ritual of Qurbani, or the sacrifice of an animal, symbolizing Prophet Ibrahim’s devotion and submission to God.

This declaration marks a significant period for Muslims globally, as they prepare for both the spiritual journey of Hajj and the joyous celebration of Eid al-Adha.
