The political rivalry between Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, has taken a new turn as Sanwo-Olu has sharply criticized Obi over his comments about the current administration of President Bola Tinubu.
Sanwo-Olu, responding to Obi’s criticisms of the Tinubu government, challenged the former governor to reflect on his own tenure as governor of Anambra. In his statement, Sanwo-Olu pointed out that Obi had not built a single school or stand-alone hospital during his time as Anambra’s governor. According to him, Obi’s tenure was marked by unfulfilled promises, and therefore, he lacks the moral standing to criticize the achievements or shortcomings of the Tinubu administration.
A Heated Exchange of Words
Sanwo-Olu’s remarks come in response to Obi’s frequent critiques of the current government. Obi, who is known for his strong stance on economic reform and good governance, has been vocal about issues surrounding governance in Nigeria. However, Sanwo-Olu questioned Obi’s ability to criticize when his own track record in Anambra left much to be desired in terms of infrastructural development.
“During your time as governor of Anambra, you had the opportunity to make a lasting impact, but you didn’t deliver the most basic necessities like hospitals and schools. How can you now stand in judgment of the current government?” Sanwo-Olu challenged.
Lack of Infrastructure in Obi’s Tenure
Sanwo-Olu’s critique was aimed at Obi’s governance, highlighting a lack of visible development during his time as governor. Sanwo-Olu stated that Obi’s administration did not invest in the long-term infrastructure needed to support the growth of the state, specifically emphasizing the absence of essential facilities like standalone hospitals and schools.
While Obi is widely admired for his efforts to save funds during his tenure and his focus on fiscal discipline, Sanwo-Olu argued that infrastructural development was just as crucial for the overall progress of any state, and the absence of such projects raises questions about Obi’s legacy in Anambra.
Obi’s Stance on Tinubu’s Government
Peter Obi, a former presidential candidate, has consistently spoken out against various government policies, particularly under President Tinubu’s leadership. Obi has raised concerns about the state of the economy, national security, and governance structures, pushing for accountability and reform.
In contrast, Sanwo-Olu supports the administration of President Tinubu, asserting that the government is working towards delivering on its promises to Nigerians. According to Sanwo-Olu, while criticisms are normal in a democratic setting, they must come from a place of sincerity and tangible achievements, which he believes are lacking in Obi’s record as a governor.
A Reminder of Leadership Responsibilities
Sanwo-Olu’s statement serves as a reminder that leadership is about more than just criticizing others. It is about providing solutions, executing plans, and leaving a positive impact on the people. Sanwo-Olu challenged Obi to use his political influence to contribute more constructively, rather than simply pointing fingers at others.
The exchange between these two politicians signals the ongoing political drama in Nigeria as 2023 presidential candidates continue to assert their positions. It also serves as a reflection of the ongoing debate about leadership, governance, and the expectations from political figures at the state and national levels.
A Call for Accountability
Sanwo-Olu’s direct challenge to Obi underscores a growing sentiment in Nigerian politics: that leaders must be held accountable not only for their critiques but also for their actions during their time in office. The focus should be on ensuring that governance is about more than just words; it is about impactful action that benefits the people and the nation.
