Russia Appoints New Navy Chief

Confirmation Follows Black Sea Attacks

Russia officially confirms Admiral Alexander Moiseyev as the new head of its navy, replacing Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov, who was reportedly dismissed in the aftermath of successful Ukrainian strikes on Russian fleet assets in the Black Sea.

Change in Leadership

Admiral Moiseyev assumed the role of acting navy chief two weeks ago and has now been formally appointed to the position. His predecessor’s removal comes amid escalating tensions and strategic setbacks for the Russian navy in the Black Sea region.

Ukrainian Strikes on Russian Fleet

Despite lacking its own navy, Ukraine has targeted Russian warships operating in the Black Sea since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022. Last month, Ukraine claimed to have destroyed a Russian landing ship, exacerbating Russia’s maritime vulnerabilities in the region.

Announcement by Defense Minister Shoigu

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announces Admiral Moiseyev’s appointment, along with the appointments of Vice Admiral Konstantin Kabantsov as commander of the Northern Fleet and Vice Admiral Sergei Pinchuk as commander of the Black Sea fleet, during a conference call on Tuesday.
