Royal Society of Biology Mourns Scientist Found Murdered in Colombia

The Royal Society of Biology (RSB) has expressed deep sorrow following the murder of Alessandro Coatti, a London-based scientist whose remains were discovered in northern Colombia.

Coatti, an Italian national, was found dead on the outskirts of Santa Marta, a port city on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, on Sunday, according to investigators.

In response to the tragic discovery, Santa Marta’s mayor Carlos Pinedo Cuello announced a reward of 50 million Colombian pesos (£8,940) for any information leading to the arrest of those responsible for Coatti’s death.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the RSB said it was “devastated” by the news.

“He was a passionate and dedicated scientist, leading RSB animal science work, writing numerous submissions, organising events and giving evidence in the House of Commons,” the organisation said.
“Ale was funny, warm, intelligent, loved by everyone he worked with and will be deeply missed by all who knew and worked with him.
Our thoughts and best wishes go out to his friends and family at this truly awful time.”

Santa Marta, known for its proximity to popular eco-tourism destinations like Tayrona National Park, Minca, and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountains, has long attracted travelers, scientists, and nature enthusiasts.

Coatti had taken a master’s course at University College London (UCL) and went on to work at the RSB for eight years, rising from science policy officer to senior science policy officer. He was well-regarded for his contributions to science policy and advocacy.

He left the RSB at the end of 2024 to volunteer in Ecuador and travel across South America, continuing his passion for wildlife and conservation.

Authorities say parts of Coatti’s dismembered body were found inside a suitcase dumped in a stream near Santa Marta. The gruesome discovery has shocked both the local community and his former colleagues.

Mayor Pinedo Cuello took to social media to condemn the crime:

“This crime will not go unpunished. The criminals must know that crime has no place in Santa Marta. We will pursue them until they are brought to justice.”

According to Colombian newspaper El Tiempo, a hotel worker recalled that Coatti had recently inquired about visiting Minca, a mountainous village near Santa Marta, and was researching local animal species.

Authorities continue to investigate the motive and suspects behind Coatti’s murder as pressure mounts to ensure justice is served.
