After the Nations League final – where Portugal will face either France or Spain – the big question is: what next for Ronaldo?
The former Real Madrid and Manchester United talisman has been playing in Saudi Arabia for Al-Nassr, where he netted 35 goals last season. But his contract is expiring, and speculation about his future is mounting. His cryptic social media message, “This chapter is over. The story? Still being written,” sparked rumors that he might leave the Saudi club.
There was talk of a possible short-term move to participate in the expanded Club World Cup this summer, despite Al-Nassr not qualifying. Brazilian club Botafogo emerged as a surprising contender, with rumors swirling about a potential temporary signing. Even FIFA president Gianni Infantino confirmed there had been “discussions” about Ronaldo featuring in the tournament.
But now, fresh reports suggest Ronaldo is set to sign a contract extension with Al-Nassr, keeping him in Saudi Arabia until he turns 42.
Can He Really Hit 1,000?
This is the burning question. Ronaldo currently sits at 937 goals across club and international matches. That means he needs 63 more to hit the mythical 1,000-goal mark — something no recognized player has ever officially achieved.
Brazilian legends Pelé and Romário claimed to have passed that number, but their totals included friendly matches and unofficial competitions, so FIFA does not acknowledge those figures.
If Ronaldo continues scoring at the same rate he did last season (35 goals), he could realistically reach 1,000 goals by mid-2026 — around the time of the FIFA World Cup in North America. Imagine that — Ronaldo reaching 1,000 goals while playing in the USA, where he already has a huge fanbase.
A Living Legacy Still in Motion
Love him or hate him, Cristiano Ronaldo is still rewriting football’s storybook. With the Germany hoodoo finally behind him, a major international trophy possibly around the corner, and the pursuit of 1,000 goals looking more achievable than ever, the legend of CR7 is far from finished.
He’s no longer just chasing records — he’s creating chapters of football history that may never be repeated.
