Early Life and Education
Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti was born on April 30, 1891, in Abeokuta, Nigeria. Coming from a family of traditional Yoruba leaders, he was instilled with a sense of responsibility and duty toward his community. He pursued his education at Abeokuta Grammar School and later furthered his studies at Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone, which was one of the leading educational institutions for West Africans at the time.

Reverend Ransome-Kuti is best remembered for his significant contributions to Nigeria’s education system. He served as the principal of Abeokuta Grammar School for nearly two decades. Under his leadership, the school flourished and became one of the most prestigious institutions in Nigeria. Advocacy for Teachers’ Rights
In addition to his work in education, Ransome-Kuti was a fierce advocate for the rights of Nigerian teachers. He founded the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) in 1931 and served as its first president. His efforts helped improve working conditions for teachers and ensured that their voices were heard in discussions about educational policy. The NUT became one of Nigeria’s most influential professional organizations, thanks to his leadership.
Religious and Community Leadership
As an ordained minister, Reverend Ransome-Kuti was also deeply involved in religious and social work. Family Legacy
Reverend Israel Oludotun Ransome-Kuti’s impact extends beyond his professional accomplishments. He is the father of Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, one of Nigeria’s most prominent women’s rights activists, and the grandfather of the legendary musician Fela Anikulapo Kuti. The Ransome-Kuti family has continued to influence Nigerian history and culture for generations, thanks in large part to his strong leadership and values.
