Regina Askia Speaks Out on Defamation Case
Former Nollywood star Regina Askia has addressed the criticism she faced for defending social critic Martin Otse, known as Very Dark Man (VDM), following a court order requiring him to delete defamatory posts about prominent legal expert, Femi Falana, and his family. Askia stated that while Falana has every right to pursue legal action or resolve the matter as he sees fit, she believes that the core issues which led to the defamatory remarks have not been properly addressed.
Court Ruling and Legal Actions
On Monday, October 14, the Ikeja High Court ruled that VDM must remove all defamatory posts regarding the Falanas from his social media platforms. Additionally, the court allowed the Falanas to serve VDM their defamation suit through his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju. This development followed VDM’s online statements targeting the Falanas, which were deemed defamatory by the court.
Regina Askia’s Instagram Post Raises Questions
Following the court’s decision, rumors began circulating on social media that VDM had been fined N500 million, though this was later revealed to be false. Regina Askia took to Instagram to question the accuracy of the reported fine and expressed concern over the lack of accountability for the person behind the audio tape that sparked the controversy. In her post, she questioned why no one was investigating the origin of the claims in the tape released by VDM, which had led to his defamatory remarks.
Askia’s Perspective on Justice
Askia’s comments reflect her view that while legal proceedings focus on the defamatory content, the underlying issues that prompted the conflict have been overshadowed. She stressed the importance of addressing the full context, suggesting that justice is incomplete if the root causes are ignored.
Backlash and Defense
Since speaking out, Askia has faced criticism from some quarters, with detractors accusing her of defending defamation. However, she clarified that her stance is not about condoning harmful statements, but about ensuring that all sides of the situation are given due attention. She reiterated that while Falana is entitled to seek justice through legal means, the initial issues that caused the defamatory content to emerge should not be forgotten.
