Quincy Promes Extradited to Netherlands to Serve 7.5-Year Prison Sentence

Former Ajax and Netherlands international winger Quincy Promes has been extradited to the Netherlands to begin serving a seven-and-a-half year prison sentence linked to drug trafficking and aggravated assault, Dutch authorities have confirmed.

Promes, 33, was arrested in Dubai last week after an international warrant was issued by Dutch police. He had been residing in the UAE after joining Dubai United in 2024.

Double Conviction and International Arrest

Promes was convicted in February 2024 for his involvement in a large-scale cocaine smuggling operation, which saw over 1,300 kilograms of the drug transported from Belgium into the Netherlands in 2020. The court handed him a six-year sentence for his role in the operation.

In addition, Promes had previously been sentenced to 18 months in prison for stabbing his cousin in the knee during a family gathering in 2020. Despite the convictions, he had not served time for either crime until now.

Denials and Appeals

The former Dutch international denies all charges and has filed appeals in both criminal cases. However, his appeals did not prevent the enforcement of the extradition process, and he has now been returned to Dutch soil.

A spokesperson for the Dutch prosecutors confirmed his arrival, stating:

“Mr. Promes has now returned to the Netherlands and will begin serving his custodial sentence. Further details, including the specific correctional facility, are still being decided.”

A Career Cut Short

Quincy Promes was once among the brightest stars in Dutch football. He debuted professionally with FC Twente in 2009, before enjoying successful stints at Spartak Moscow, Sevilla, and Ajax. He later returned to Spartak Moscow in 2021 for a second spell, which lasted until his move to Dubai United in 2024.

Over the course of his career, Promes earned 50 caps for the Netherlands, scoring seven goals. His last appearance for the national team came in 2023, just months before his legal troubles escalated.

A Fall from Grace

The case of Quincy Promes has sparked widespread media attention in the Netherlands and abroad, highlighting a stark contrast between his celebrated football career and his criminal proceedings.

What remains uncertain is where he will serve his sentence and whether his pending appeals could alter the course of his incarceration. For now, the former winger finds himself off the pitch and behind bars, as one of the most high-profile Dutch athletes to face criminal sentencing in recent memory.
