Protesters Demand Release of Detained Journalist Daniel Ojukwu

Protesters Demand Justice

In a show of solidarity, Civil Society Organisations and journalists descended upon the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Thursday, demanding the immediate release of Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ).

Voices of Protest

Among the demonstrators were notable figures such as legal practitioner Deji Adeyanju and Pro-democracy activist Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress in the 2023 general elections.

Demand for Freedom

Carrying banners emblazoned with messages including ‘Free Daniel Ojukwu,’ ‘No to a police state,’ ‘Journalism is not a crime,’ and ‘Stop the impunity,’ the protesters made their demands clear for all to see.

Ongoing Concerns

The situation escalated when Ojukwu was transferred to the National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja by the Intelligence Response Team of the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun. Concerns deepened as Ojukwu had gone missing on May 1, with his phone unreachable, leaving loved ones in the dark about his whereabouts.

Condemnation and Frustration

Soyombo, speaking on behalf of FIJ, expressed frustration at the lack of progress in locating Ojukwu, condemning the abduction as both troubling and unacceptable. Despite efforts to file missing person reports, his whereabouts remained undisclosed, prompting widespread condemnation of the incident.
