U.S. President Donald Trump stirred controversy on Friday night after posting an AI-generated image of himself dressed in papal robes on Truth Social. The image, which shows Trump as the Pope, comes just days after he joked in an interview that he “would like to be Pope.”
The timing of the post has drawn sharp criticism, as it follows the recent death of Pope Francis. The 88-year-old pontiff passed away last month after suffering a stroke and heart failure, according to a death certificate issued by Vatican physician Dr. Andrea Arcangeli. President Trump was among the world leaders who attended the funeral service.
Many online have condemned the image as distasteful and disrespectful. One user wrote, “This is disrespectful to the church and God himself… he’s literally the antichrist.” Another added, “This is disgusting and entirely offensive,” while others accused the president of narcissism and mocked his portrayal of religious authority.
“This is extremely disrespectful and narcissistic. Republicans really voted for that,” one commenter posted. Another said, “How dare you mock the process we Catholics go through to pick a new pope.”
When asked recently who he would like to see succeed Pope Francis, Trump replied with a grin, “I’d like to be Pope. That would be my number one choice.” He then added, “I have no preference. We have a cardinal from New York who’s very good, so we’ll see what happens.”
The president’s actions have reignited debate over the use of AI in political messaging, religious sensitivity, and his ongoing approach to public discourse.
What do you think? Was Trump’s post out of line—or just a harmless joke? Share your thoughts.
