Pope Leo XIV’s Inauguration: FFK Trolls Peter Obi Over Alleged Access Denial

Former Nigerian Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode (FFK), took to social media to criticize former presidential candidate Peter Obi following the inauguration of Pope Leo XIV in Rome on May 18, 2025. FFK shared a video purportedly showing Obi and former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi being questioned by security personnel at the Vatican. He claimed that Obi was initially denied access to the Pope and only gained entry after President Bola Tinubu intervened. FFK used the incident to advise Obi’s supporters, known as “Obidients,” to seek environments where they are “accepted and appreciated” rather than merely tolerated.

Peter Obi’s Clarification

In response, Peter Obi clarified that his attendance at the papal inauguration was not politically motivated. He emphasized that such events hold profound moral and spiritual significance and should remain above political discourse. Obi noted that he did not attend the Papal Audience, which is traditionally reserved for heads of state and accredited diplomats, and therefore did not meet the Pope personally. He urged that the focus remain on the Pope’s message, which called for unity, compassion, and a commitment to fighting poverty and corruption.

Interaction with President Tinubu

During the event, Obi and Fayemi encountered President Bola Tinubu. Fayemi introduced Obi to Tinubu, leading to a light-hearted exchange where Tinubu remarked, “I should be the one welcoming you and Peter. I’m the Head of the Nigerian Delegation.” Obi responded affirmatively, acknowledging their shared presence at the event.

Broader Implications

The incident has sparked discussions about the intersection of politics and religious events. While FFK’s comments have been seen by some as politically charged, others view Obi’s attendance as a personal spiritual journey. The event underscores the importance of maintaining the sanctity of religious ceremonies and the need to separate them from political agendas.
