Police fire tear gas at peaceful protesters in Abuja over economic hardship, repression concerns

On Monday, police officers disrupted a peaceful demonstration in the Maitama area of Abuja, deploying tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The protestors had gathered to call attention to the worsening economic situation, increasing repression, and the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act. The march was part of a nationwide protest led by the Take-It-Back Movement in collaboration with various civil society organizations.

Coincidentally, the demonstration took place on National Police Day, as the Nigeria Police Force held a ceremonial event at Eagle Square. In preparation for the celebration, authorities had cordoned off areas around the Three Arms Zone, where senior police officials were expected.

Among the demonstrators was Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and former presidential candidate. Protesters held placards bearing messages such as “Stop the Repression” and “Let Us Breathe”, aimed at drawing attention to what they believe is a troubling trend of authoritarianism under the current government.

Juwon Sanyaolu, the National Coordinator of the Take-It-Back Movement, who spearheaded the protest, outlined some of the main issues fueling public anger: rampant inflation, widespread insecurity, and what he referred to as a “state of emergency” in Rivers State.

Though the protest started without incident, tension escalated when law enforcement operatives fired tear gas canisters into the crowd, forcing demonstrators to flee.

As of the time of reporting, there have been no confirmed injuries or arrests.
