Swift Action by Nigeria Police

Ahead of the Edo State governorship election, the Nigeria Police Force successfully apprehended two political thugs during an overnight raid at multiple locations across the state. The arrests, made as part of heightened security measures, are a significant step in curbing electoral violence.

Statement from the Police Force

The Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a press statement on Saturday, September 21, announcing the arrests. According to Adejobi, the suspects were found with illegal firearms, including three cut-to-size locally fabricated pistols and one locally made gun. The arrests were made possible through intelligence gathering and a swift police response to prevent potential election violence.

Details of the Arrests

The two suspects, Edwin Obanor, 43, and Audu Tajudeen, 41, were caught in separate locations. Obanor, identified as the leader of an armed group, was arrested at Oredo Ward 4 at around 9 pm, while Tajudeen, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Ugbogbo quarters, Igara Akoko, was detained in Igara Akoko, Edo, on the eve of the election.

Recovered Firearms and Weapons

During a search of their possessions, the police recovered three cut-to-size pistols from Obanor, while Tajudeen was found with a locally made gun. The confiscation of these weapons underscores the seriousness of the security threats posed during election periods and the need for vigilance.

Commitment to Peaceful Elections

The police, alongside other security agencies, reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order during the election. The arrests highlight the force’s dedication to ensuring a peaceful and violence-free electoral process in Edo State.

Impact On The Society

These arrests serve as a clear warning to those intending to disrupt the election. The Nigeria Police Force remains vigilant and will continue to take decisive actions to prevent violence and protect the democratic process.
