The Niger State Police Command has successfully apprehended six individuals suspected of engaging in thuggery, armed robbery, public disturbance, and possession of dangerous weapons, including illicit drugs. This operation comes in response to rising concerns about public safety in various neighborhoods of Minna.
Details of the Arrests
On October 14, 2024, the police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, released a statement detailing the arrests. The incidents leading to these arrests began on October 5, 2024, when reports surfaced of rampant thuggery and violent robberies occurring in the Fadikpe, Kutirko, and Angwan-Kanawa areas of Gbeganu, Minna. Residents reported that armed individuals had been attacking unsuspecting community members and shop owners.
Following these alarming reports, police patrol teams were deployed to the affected areas. However, the perpetrators managed to evade capture at that time. In response, a coordinated sting operation was initiated by Area Commander Bosso, ACP Galadima Lassa, involving officers from Kpakungu and GRA Divisions.
The Sting Operation
On October 7, 2024, at approximately 1:00 AM, the operation was conducted based on credible intelligence. The following suspects were arrested during the raid:
- Musa Umar, 50, of Kulogbe, a self-proclaimed youth leader
- Sirajo Isyaku, 20, of Kutirko
- Yusuf Ahmed, 18, of Kutirko
- Bashir Yahaya, 20, of Fadikpe
- Shuaibu Mohammed, 38, of Fadikpe
- Usman Adamu, 21, of Sabon-Titi
Preliminary investigations revealed that Musa Umar had been inciting violence between local youth groups, specifically urging the Kulogbe youths to confront the Kutirko boys, which led to public disturbances.
Evidence and Ongoing Investigations
During the operation, police recovered several items from the suspects, including:
- Twenty-five wraps of suspected cannabis
- Four mobile phones believed to be stolen
- A knife
- A sword
- Three sticks
The suspects are currently under investigation at the Bosso Area Command, and the police have indicated that they will be charged in court. Authorities are also continuing efforts to locate additional suspects who are still at large.
Community Safety Efforts
This operation underscores the Niger State Police Command’s commitment to enhancing public safety and tackling crime in the region. The police are actively working to restore peace and order in the communities affected by these criminal activities.
