Peter Obi Clarifies Coalition Involvement: Focused on Combating Bad Governance, Hunger, and Poverty

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has emphasized that his participation in a coalition ahead of the 2027 elections is driven by a commitment to address Nigeria’s pressing issues, rather than personal political aspirations. In response to reports suggesting an agreement with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to serve as his running mate, Obi stated, “You can make of the report what you want, but I’m in a coalition against bad governance, hunger, and poverty.

Addressing Speculations of a Vice Presidential Deal

Speculations have arisen regarding a potential agreement between Obi and Atiku Abubakar, wherein Obi would serve as Vice President if Atiku runs for a single term in 2027. Obi neither confirmed nor denied such an arrangement but reiterated his focus on national issues over political positions. He remarked, “Politics for me is not about positions; it is about doing the right thing.

Obidient Movement Refutes VP Slot Claims

The Obidient Movement, supporting Obi, has dismissed reports linking him to a vice-presidential role under Atiku. Nana Kazaure, Director of Strategic Communications, stated that Obi’s involvement in any coalition aims to tackle issues like bad governance, corruption, hunger, and poverty, not to pursue political positions.

Emphasis on Education and Healthcare

During a recent event in Kubwa, Abuja, where Obi donated ₦10 million each to school and hospital projects organized by the Anglican Church, he highlighted the importance of investing in education and healthcare. Obi expressed concern over the high rate of corruption in Nigeria, stating it deprives the nation of necessary funds for critical sectors.

Coalition Talks and Future Political Plans

While discussions about forming a coalition with Atiku Abubakar and other opposition leaders are ongoing, details remain undisclosed. Sources indicate that Obi is preparing to declare his 2027 presidential ambition independently, focusing on building a robust platform to address Nigeria’s challenges.
