Parents Rally for Specialized Education in Abia State

Parents and caregivers of children with cerebral palsy in Abia State are urgently calling on the government to create schools that cater specifically to the unique needs of their children. This heartfelt plea emerged during a gathering organized by The Straight Child Foundation (TSCF) in Umuahia, the state capital, known as the ‘Parents’ Support Group.

Gratitude for Foundation’s Outreach

Parents such as Mrs. Emelike Ozioma, Mrs. Uche Rita, and Mrs. Florence Okorie took a moment to express their heartfelt appreciation for TSCF’s proactive efforts in collaborating with the government. Their impassioned appeal revolves around the need for support in establishing and equipping special needs schools, aiming to alleviate the ongoing challenges faced by their children.

Acknowledging Dr. Peace Amaraegbulam’s Humanitarian Impact

The parents took the opportunity to recognize and thank Dr. Peace Amaraegbulam, the founder of TSCF, for her selfless humanitarian contributions. In their message, they encouraged fellow parents to draw strength from their shared experiences.

Prioritizing Caregivers’ Well-being

Physiotherapist Dr. Samuel Abbah delivered a heartfelt lecture titled ‘Taking Care of the Caregivers,’ stressing the vital importance of caregivers looking after their own well-being. Dr. Abbah emphasized key aspects such as essential family practices, maintaining a balanced diet, fostering open communication, taking respite, and seeking professional assistance.

Empowering Parents to Set Realistic Goals

Dr. Abbah urged parents and caregivers to set achievable goals, manage their time effectively, and seek support networks to navigate the inherent stress and frustrations associated with caring for children with cerebral palsy.

Raising Awareness of Disability Act and Advocacy Initiatives

Dr. Amaraegbulam reminded parents of the Abia State Disability Act, underscoring the importance of understanding its content. TSCF’s advocacy initiatives include meetings with government officials, including the Special Adviser to the governor, aimed at spreading awareness about the foundation’s services.

Future Endeavors for TSCF

Mr. Amadi Bright, TSCF Project Supervisor, shed light on future plans, revealing intentions to establish a dedicated gym room for children with cerebral palsy within the foundation in Umuahia.
