The papal conclave has entered its second day, with 133 cardinal electors reconvening in the Sistine Chapel to select the 267th pope, following the death of Pope Francis on April 21 at the age of 88. The first day concluded without a decision, as indicated by black smoke rising from the chapel’s chimney.

This conclave is notable for its unprecedented diversity, featuring cardinals from 70 countries, reflecting Pope Francis’s efforts to globalize the Church’s leadership. Among the leading candidates are Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican Secretary of State, and Filipino Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle. Other potential contenders include Hungarian Cardinal Péter Erdő and French Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline. The cardinals are sequestered without access to phones or the internet and have taken oaths of secrecy. They will participate in up to four voting sessions today, with ballots burned after each session. The color of the smoke signals the outcome: black for no decision and white when a new pope is elected.

Observers in St. Peter’s Square remain vigilant, awaiting the white smoke that will announce the election of the new pontiff.
