Human rights lawyer Inibehe Effiong has confirmed that over ₦10 million was raised within four days to assist 17-year-old Quadri Yusuf Alabi, who gained national attention during the 2023 presidential campaign for standing in front of Peter Obi’s convoy. The funds are intended to support Alabi’s relocation and rehabilitation following his traumatic experiences in prison.
Background of the Incident
Alabi’s viral moment occurred in 2023 when he stood in front of Peter Obi’s convoy during the presidential campaign. However, in January 2025, he was arrested and charged with armed robbery, a case that was later dismissed due to lack of evidence. Alabi’s lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, revealed that the teenager was wrongfully detained after being abducted by local youths who harbored resentment over financial donations Alabi received following his viral encounter with Obi.
Prison Experience
During his time at Kirikiri Prison, Alabi was subjected to inhumane treatment, including being forced to clean feces from the prison’s pit toilet from morning to night. He described the experience as dehumanizing, stating that he was treated like someone without a family and had no money to give the wardens, leaving him in that condition.
Public Support and Fundraising Efforts
Following his release, Nigerians rallied to support Alabi, raising over ₦10 million in just four days. The funds are aimed at assisting him with relocation and rehabilitation. Alabi expressed his gratitude, stating, “I want to thank Nigerians. God will bless them. People that are blessing me — God will not forget them too.”
Looking Ahead
Despite the trauma he endured, Alabi is determined to move forward. He has expressed a desire to return to school and build a better future for himself. His story has shed light on issues of wrongful detention and the treatment of young Nigerians within the justice system.
