Lyon midfielder Nemanja Matić has slammed Manchester United goalkeeper André Onana, branding him “one of the worst goalkeepers in United’s history” in response to recent comments made by the Cameroonian shot-stopper.
The heated exchange comes after Onana boldly claimed that Manchester United are “way better” than Ligue 1 side Lyon, ahead of their Europa League quarter-final first leg clash in France.
Onana, speaking with confidence before Thursday’s encounter, stated:
“I think we are way better than them.”
Matić, who now plays for Lyon after spending five years at Old Trafford, was asked about Onana’s remarks during a pre-match press conference on Wednesday—and he didn’t hold back.
“You need to have cover to say something like that,” said the Serbian international, who made 189 appearances for Manchester United from 2017 to 2022.
“I respect everyone but to say that then you need to get an answer.
If you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United’s history, you need to take care about what you are talking about.”
In response later on Wednesday, Onana appeared to throw subtle shade back at Matić, referencing his own silverware with the Red Devils.
“Not everyone” can say they have lifted a trophy at United, Onana said, in a clear nod to Matić’s trophyless spell with the club.
Despite featuring in multiple finals during his time at Manchester United, Matić left the club without winning a major title—while Onana helped United lift the Carabao Cup in 2024.
The war of words has only added more fire to what was already shaping up to be an intense European tie between the two sides.
