The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, has spoken out from detention, claiming that certain Igbo individuals and groups are taking advantage of his incarceration to destabilize the Southeast region. Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since his controversial arrest and extradition, expressed concerns over the increasing security challenges in the region.
Kanu’s Allegations Against Internal Saboteurs
In a statement relayed through his legal team, Kanu accused some self-serving Igbo elites of working against the collective interests of the Southeast. According to him, these individuals are exploiting his absence to push their personal and political agendas at the expense of the Igbo people.
“I have observed with deep pain how some so-called Igbo leaders and enemies of our struggle are taking advantage of my detention to unleash havoc on our land. Instead of standing for justice, they are aiding external forces in oppressing our people,” Kanu reportedly stated.
Security Challenges in the Southeast
The Southeast has witnessed rising insecurity, with violence, killings, and economic disruptions affecting various states. Kanu suggests that his detention has emboldened saboteurs and political opportunists to fuel the crisis rather than working towards a peaceful resolution.
His supporters believe that the Nigerian government’s refusal to release him despite multiple court rulings is part of a broader agenda to suppress pro-Biafra movements.
Calls for Justice and Dialogue
Kanu reiterated his commitment to self-determination and the rights of the Igbo people, emphasizing that his struggle is for the betterment of the region. He urged Ndigbo to remain united and resist external and internal forces working against their interests.
Many Igbo groups, traditional leaders, and human rights organizations have continued to call for his unconditional release, arguing that his prolonged detention is fueling unrest in the Southeast.
The Way Forward
With tensions still high in the region, there are growing calls for dialogue, peace, and justice. While some stakeholders insist on Kanu’s release as a step towards reconciliation, others believe that the Nigerian government must address underlying grievances to restore stability in the Southeast.
