NLC Unaware of Labour Party Merger Talks Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Labour Party (LP), a socio-democratic political party founded by organized labour in Nigeria, has recently been at the center of merger speculations. These rumors suggest a possible alliance between the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). This follows meetings between the 2023 presidential candidate of the LP, Peter Obi, and the PDP’s 2023 candidate, Atiku Abubakar.

 Key Meetings Fuel Merger Rumors

Peter Obi reportedly met with several key PDP figures in Abuja, including a former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and a former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido. This speculation is further fueled by the fact that in the 2019 elections, Obi ran as the vice-presidential candidate alongside Atiku on the PDP ticket. However, internal conflicts within the PDP led to Obi’s departure in 2022, after which he contested the 2023 presidential election as the Labour Party’s candidate.

Atiku Hints at Possible Alliance

After a recent meeting with Obi on May 13, 2024, Atiku Abubakar stated that PDP members would decide their fate for the 2027 general elections. He mentioned that if the PDP chose to field a presidential candidate from the South-East and selected Obi, he would support this decision. Atiku’s comments have further fueled speculation about a potential merger or alliance between the LP and PDP ahead of the next elections.

NLC’s Stance on Merger Talks

Despite these developments, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has clarified that the congress is not aware of any merger talks involving the Labour Party. When questioned about the possibility of such discussions or the involvement of organized labour in these talks, Ajaero responded, “We are not aware of such talks.”

As political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, the potential for a merger between the Labour Party and the PDP remains speculative. The NLC, a significant stakeholder in the Labour Party, has not been involved in or informed of any merger discussions, leaving the future of such an alliance uncertain.
