Nigeria Targets Malnutrition: Vice President Inaugurates “Engine Room” Committee

In a resolute push to tackle acute malnutrition nationwide, Nigeria’s Vice President, Kashim Shettima, has inaugurated a high-powered committee, declaring, “We are determined to upturn the negative nutrition indices of this country.”

This “intellectual powerhouse,” as Shettima dubbed the committee, brings together diverse expertise from government ministries, international organizations, private foundations, and civil society. Their mission: spearhead a multi-sectoral attack on malnutrition, prioritizing intervention in vulnerable communities.

Shettima’s call to action was clear: “Advise us, draw the roadmap.” He emphasized the committee’s role as critical advisors, steering the country towards impactful solutions. He also invoked a shared responsibility, reminding members, “We are all products of the public school system, and history will judge us harshly if we fail to change the narrative of this country.”

This goes beyond healthcare, stressed Uju Okorocha, Committee Chair and Special Assistant to the President on Public Health. Education and broader socio-economic factors play a crucial role. Hence, the committee will adopt a multi-pronged approach, ensuring coordinated efforts across government agencies and exploring innovative financing mechanisms.

“The team here has the knowledge that we can leverage on to move the needle on the issue of malnutrition in Nigeria,” declared Okorocha, highlighting the committee’s potential.

Members themselves echoed this sentiment, advocating for a dedicated delivery unit within the Vice President’s office to monitor progress and hold stakeholders accountable. They also emphasized the need for dedicated nutrition departments across all government ministries and agencies, from national to local levels.

With this comprehensive strategy and diverse expertise at its core, Nigeria’s fight against acute malnutrition has gained significant momentum. This newly inaugurated committee, dubbed the “engine room,” could mark a turning point in the country’s struggle to ensure access to adequate nutrition for all its citizens.
