The Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, has unveiled plans to launch a more accessible e-Visa application channel for short visits. This initiative aligns with the Nigeria Visa Policy 2020 and aims to streamline visa processes, foster Foreign Direct Investments (FDIs), and boost tourism.
Graduation Ceremony at Immigration Command and Staff College
Mrs. Nandap’s announcement was made during the graduation ceremony of the 12th Command Course at the Immigration Command and Staff College in Sokoto. The address was delivered on her behalf by Assistant Comptroller General (ACG) George Didel. Kenneth Udo, the Service Public Relations Officer, released a statement in Abuja on Tuesday detailing the event.
Enhancing Border Control and Monitoring Mechanisms
The Comptroller General emphasized the need to embrace reforms and implement effective internal control and monitoring mechanisms to track the presence and activities of all foreigners in Nigeria. She reiterated her commitment to fully implementing the e-Border Project, which includes:
– Installation of e-Gates at international airports in Lagos and Abuja
– Integration of the Advance Passenger Information System (API)
– Incorporation of the Passenger Name Record (PNR) to enhance border control and clearance systems
These measures are expected to significantly improve intelligence sharing and operational coordination, thereby enhancing national security.
Strengthening NIS Operations
Mrs. Nandap called for the revitalization of NIS’s Divisional Offices and improved participation in Security Council Meetings at State and Local Government levels. She stressed the importance of professionalism and interagency collaboration in carrying out ad-hoc duties.
Automation of Passport Application Processes
The CG urged formation heads to work diligently towards the success of automating passport application processes. The automation aims to reduce human interaction, curtail sharp practices, and enhance efficiency. The ongoing rollout of enhanced e-Passports will continue locally and at foreign missions until a full transition is achieved.
Nationwide Sensitisation Campaign Against Irregular Migration
Mrs. Nandap encouraged all NIS formations to actively participate in a nationwide sensitisation campaign against irregular migration, particularly the Smuggling of Migrants (SOM). She reaffirmed NIS’s commitment to capacity building for all service cadres, emphasizing the importance of engaging partners and stakeholders in sustaining training and capacity-building programs.
Commitment to Officer Welfare
The Comptroller General pledged to improve the welfare of NIS officers through timely promotions, affordable housing, and healthcare schemes. She urged course participants to be agents of transformation and to uphold the highest standards of professionalism.
Awards and Recognition
The highlight of the event was the awarding of the “Passed Command Course” (PCC) to all participants. Additionally, directing staff received the “Dagger Merit Award (+)” in recognition of their dedication and hard work.
