In a shocking twist that could leave millions of Nigerians offline, Meta, the tech giant behind Facebook and Instagram, is threatening to shut down its platforms in the country. Why? A jaw-dropping $290 million in fines and what Meta calls “impossible” rules slapped on them by Nigerian regulators.

The drama escalated after a federal high court in Abuja backed the penalties handed down by three powerful Nigerian agencies in 2023. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) hit Meta with a whopping $220 million fine over alleged anti-competitive behaviour. Then came the Advertising Regulatory Council with a $37.5 million bill for running unauthorised ads. And just when you thought it was over, the Nigerian Data Protection Commission (NDPC) piled on another $32.8 million for data privacy violations.

But Meta isn’t just upset about the money—it’s furious over the NDPC’s demand that it must get permission before moving any personal data out of Nigeria. Even more outrageous, the agency wants Meta to partner with government-approved bodies to create public education materials on data privacy. Meta says that’s not only unrealistic but completely misinformed.
With tensions boiling over, Meta has warned it may be forced to pull the plug on Facebook and Instagram in Nigeria altogether if things don’t change fast. The court has given the tech giant until the end of June to cough up the cash—or face the consequences.
Nigerian users, brace yourselves—your favorite apps might disappear from your phones sooner than you think.
