In the premiere episode of her new podcast, “Confessions of a Female Founder,” Meghan Markle candidly discussed the intense and often “brutalizing” bullying she has endured over the years.
Her first guest, Whitney Wolfe Herd, the CEO of the dating app Bumble, touched on the subject while reflecting on the harsh media scrutiny Markle has faced. Wolfe Herd expressed her sympathy, saying, “When I see the way you’ve been treated in the media, which is a magnitude I’ll never understand, my heart breaks for you. It’s not fair.”
The Bumble CEO, 35, continued, calling the magnitude of the media treatment something “no one can understand.”
Markle, 43, responded, acknowledging that Whitney Wolfe Herd might not fully grasp the weight of her experience, but appreciated how Herd shows up for her nonetheless, explaining, “Maybe because you understand it in whatever degree, you know how to show up for me.”
Wolfe Herd clarified her empathy, admitting that while she can imagine the weight of it, she can never fully understand the extent, emphasizing the sheer magnitude of Markle’s experiences.
She went on to recount her surprise upon seeing Markle’s image on the cover of every major publication during a trip to Ireland, saying, “My jaw hit the floor. I’m in Ireland, and she’s back home in California with her kids doing school drop-offs, and she’s on every front page. What are they talking about?”
The two friends agreed that the coverage seemed to lack substance, with Markle adding, “I know, there was no content.”
Markle then offered an insightful perspective on the nature of bullying, noting that it doesn’t matter the scale—it still feels the same. “No matter whatever scale you’re at, there’s gonna be a point where you’re gonna take a hit,” she said. “And there’s gonna be a point where you have to decide whether you’re going to cower or conquer or rise above it.”
Wolfe Herd, visibly impressed by Markle’s resilience, said, “There is so much to be said for your ability to exist even in the presence of that. That takes a very strong cookie.”
Markle’s public life began to take center stage in 2016 when she began dating Prince Harry, and their relationship grew as they married in 2018. Since stepping down from their royal duties in 2020, Markle and Harry have lived in Montecito, California, where they raise their two children, Archie (5) and Lilibet (3).
In addition to addressing the toll of media bullying, Markle also discussed the personal challenges she faced after giving birth to Lilibet, revealing her “scary” battle with postpartum preeclampsia and her struggle to maintain a work-life balance as a mother of two.
Through the episode, Markle’s strength and ability to persevere amid public scrutiny became a central theme, with her friend Whitney Wolfe Herd constantly praising her resolve.
