Margaret Oyibo: Tragic Suicide Linked to Marital Issues

Margaret Oyibo Atayi, a young mother from Benue State, Nigeria, was found dead on Monday, May 20, 2024. Her family revealed that Margaret’s death was a result of suicide, triggered by depression from her troubled marriage.

Disappearance and Discovery

Margaret, an Idoma girl from Ugbokolo, Okpokwu Local Government Area (LGA) of Benue State, was last seen near the City College of Education on Abacha Road, Mararaba, close to Abuja, at around 3 a.m. on Friday, May 17. Her absence was alarming, and a search was launched. Sadly, her body was discovered late on Monday, and evidence pointed to suicide.

Family’s Heartbreaking Confirmation

Margaret’s father, Mr. Atayi, confirmed the tragic news, detailing her struggles. “Margaret was a mother of two children. She has been in depression for some time now due to mistreatment by her husband,” he said. According to Mr. Atayi, she left the house early on that Friday morning without informing anyone, and it was later confirmed that she had taken her own life.

Sister’s Emotional Tribute

Margaret’s sister, Stella Ameh, expressed her grief and gratitude to those who helped search for Margaret. In a Facebook post, Stella wrote, “Sunset at dawn. I want to use this medium to thank everyone for their enormous help, time, and resources put together in finding our sister Margaret. Yes, she was found but has gone to find rest with her maker. God bless you all.”

Public Reactions and Further Details

Responding to comments on social media, Stella provided more context about Margaret’s situation. She mentioned that Margaret had been deeply depressed due to her marital issues and had previously spoken about feeling that suicide was her only option. Margaret had been married to a man from Orokam, Ogbadibo LGA of Benue State. Following the death of his first wife, they had moved abroad with their children before he relocated Margaret back to Nigeria and abandoned her.
