President Lazarus Chekwara of Malawi has declared a 21-day national mourning period in honor of Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine other individuals who perished in a plane crash. The President has ordered all national flags to be flown at half-mast during this period of mourning.

The ill-fated Dornier 228 aircraft, carrying Vice President Chilima and his co-passengers, went missing on Monday, June 10, 2024. The wreckage was discovered on Tuesday, June 11, in the Chikangawa Forest Reserve, located in the northern part of Malawi. The group had been en route from Lilongwe, the capital, to extend condolences to the family of former cabinet minister Ralph Kasambara.

Chilima was known for his strong stance against corruption, despite facing corruption charges himself, which were recently dropped.

Chilima had a distinguished academic and professional background. He earned a degree in social sciences from the University of Malawi in 1994, followed by a master’s degree in Knowledge Management in 2006. In 2015, he completed his Ph.D. in Knowledge Management from the University of Bolton, United Kingdom. Chilima also served as the Minister of Economic Planning and Development and headed Public Sector Reforms in Malawi.

Chilima was the first child of Henderson Brown Chilima and Elizabeth Frances Chilima. He spent his early life in Blantyre, where his parents worked. His life and career were marked by significant achievements and a commitment to public service.
