Mayor’s Commitment:Mayor Sadiq Khan allocates £123 million to extend the freeze until March 2025, putting money back in people’s pockets and making transportation more affordable for millions.
The freeze encompasses fares for buses, trams, Tube underground trains, Docklands Light Railway, and a majority of fares on the new Elizabeth line and Overground rail. Originally, Transport for London had planned for a 4% fare increase.
While the freeze is a positive development, it’s worth noting that London still grapples with relatively high public transport fares compared to other European capitals. Greenpeace’s report last year ranked London as the second-least affordable for public transport among 30 European capitals, just ahead of Dublin.
The announcement aligns with efforts to encourage more people to utilize the public transport network, contributing to sustainable and accessible commuting options for Londoners. As the city takes this step toward affordability, residents anticipate a positive impact on their daily lives and finances.
