Kogi Housewife Arrested for Abandoning Newborn in Gutter

A housewife named Barkisu Sulaiman has been arrested in the Karaworo area of Lokoja, Kogi State, for allegedly abandoning her day-old baby in a gutter. The incident occurred on October 2, 2024, and has since sparked significant outrage within the community.

Details of the Incident

The baby was discovered by local residents, who promptly notified the authorities. Barkisu was apprehended and handed over to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) after a tip-off from a close confidant. This individual reportedly felt compelled to inform an elderly man in the Karaworo-Lokoja area about Barkisu’s actions.

Background Information

According to reports, Barkisu had previously confided in her friend about being seven months pregnant with a child fathered by one of her sick husband’s servants, who resides in Adankolo-Lokoja. The alleged father of the baby is currently at large and had reportedly rejected the pregnancy, advising Barkisu to terminate it.

Confession and Community Reaction

Upon being confronted by community members, Barkisu allegedly confessed to throwing her infant into the gutter due to the shame of cheating on her sick husband, who is unable to work due to a spinal cord injury. This revelation has led to widespread condemnation from local residents.

Official Response

Paul Igweibuke, the commandant of the Kogi NSCDC, confirmed Barkisu’s arrest, stating, “The woman was handed over to my command by the Ministry of Women Affairs, Kogi State.” He elaborated that she was married with six children and described the circumstances surrounding her pregnancy as tragic.

Igweibuke added, “We are keeping her in custody as NSCDC is collaborating with the Ministry of Women Affairs to ensure sanity in our state.” This statement underscores the commitment of local authorities to address such distressing incidents and promote the well-being of women and children.

More Investigations to Unfold

The incident has raised awareness about the challenges faced by women in difficult circumstances, particularly those dealing with issues of domestic abuse and unplanned pregnancies. Community leaders and authorities are expected to address the underlying social issues to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
