Kano Assembly Dissolves Five Emirate Councils, Grants Governor Sole Power to Appoint Emirs

The Kano State House of Assembly has dissolved all five emirate councils in the state, granting Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf exclusive authority to appoint new Emirs. This decision followed thorough deliberations during a plenary session on Thursday.

Amendment Bill Passed

The Kano State Emirate Council Amendment Bill was swiftly considered, passing its second and third readings on the same Thursday morning.

Restoring Kano’s Glory

Deputy Speaker Alhaji Muhammad Bello Butu Butu elaborated that repealing the previous law aims to restore Kano’s lost glory. He argued that the division of the Kano Emirate into five separate councils diminished the state’s prestige and influence at the national level.

Cultural Preservation

Majority Leader Alhaji Lawan Hussaini Dala emphasized the importance of the emirate council as a custodian of cultural heritage. He noted that the creation of additional emirates had distorted this cultural role.

Administrative Changes

In a statement to journalists, Dala clarified that with the new amendment, the five emirate councils are officially abolished. The Commissioner for Local Governments will temporarily oversee these functions. Additionally, the House adopted a motion to establish a new second-class emirate council within the state.
