Veteran Nigerian actor Kanayo O. Kanayo has publicly criticized the Catholic Church’s tradition of using black smoke to signify an unsuccessful papal election. In a video shared on social media, Kanayo expressed concern that associating “black” with failure reinforces negative perceptions of blackness and, by extension, the African community
The Symbolism of Smoke in Papal Conclaves
During a papal conclave, the Catholic Church uses smoke signals to communicate the outcome of the voting process. Black smoke indicates that no consensus has been reached, while white smoke announces the election of a new pope. Kanayo questioned this symbolism, stating
“When they fail, it’s black smoke. When they succeed, it’s white smoke… This has been ingrained in the minds of the world that black is failure.
A Call for Change
Kanayo suggested that the Church consider alternative colors to represent an inconclusive vote, proposing blue smoke as a replacement for black. He argued that such a change would help dismantle long standing associations of blackness with negativity
Let blue smoke mean a new Pope has not been elected and let white smoke mean he has. Remove the black. It’s not good for us.
Public Reaction
The actor’s remarks have sparked a range of reactions online. Some individuals support his perspective, viewing it as a meaningful critique of symbolic racism. Others defend the Church’s traditions, arguing that the color choices are based on practical considerations rather than racial implications.
Broader Implications
Kanayo’s comments contribute to ongoing discussions about the symbolism embedded in cultural and religious practices. His critique invites institutions to reflect on how their traditions may inadvertently perpetuate negative stereotypes and to consider reforms that promote inclusivity and positive representation.
