Iran Declares Five Days of Mourning for President Raisi

Iran’s President, Ebrahim Raisi, and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian were killed in a helicopter crash in north-western Iran. The incident occurred in a mountainous area near the border with Azerbaijan. State media confirmed that the helicopter carrying the officials and their entourage came down on Sunday in foggy conditions.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. He offered his condolences “to the dear people of Iran,” acknowledging the significant loss to the nation. Mr. Raisi, 63, was regarded as a potential successor to the Supreme Leader.

Following the tragedy, Vice-President Mohammad Mokhber has been appointed to assume interim duties. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani has been named acting foreign minister. Elections to choose a new president are scheduled for 28 June.

The Iranian Red Crescent confirmed the recovery of the bodies and stated that search operations had ended. The organization’s chief announced the transfer of the bodies to Tabriz, where Mr. Raisi’s funeral will be held on Tuesday.

– Pakistan: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif declared a national day of mourning.

– India: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and shock.

The White House, however, focused on Raisi’s controversial legacy. National Security spokesman John Kirby criticized Raisi for his support of terrorist networks and his role in human rights abuses within Iran, including the violent crackdown on protesters.
