A tragic hit-and-run incident has claimed the life of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Idris Lawal, who was attached to the Ekiti State Police Command. The unfortunate incident occurred during a routine stop-and-search operation in Ado-Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State.
The Incident
The fatal accident took place around 11 p.m. on Monday, September 9, 2024, at Ayemi Garage, along Iworoko Road. ASP Idris Lawal, while performing his duties at a police checkpoint, was struck by a hit-and-run driver. The vehicle responsible for the officer’s death is described as a white, unmarked Mercedes Benz. The driver reportedly sped off after crushing the police officer, leaving him critically injured at the scene.
Response and Efforts to Save the Officer
After being hit, ASP Lawal was immediately rushed to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (EKSUTH) by his colleagues and witnesses at the scene in a bid to save his life. However, despite the prompt response, medical professionals at the hospital pronounced him dead on arrival. The officer’s remains have since been deposited at the hospital’s morgue, where an autopsy will be conducted to ascertain the precise cause of death.
Police Efforts to Apprehend the Culprit
Following the tragic event, the Ekiti State Police Command has launched an intensive manhunt for the driver involved in the hit-and-run. According to an internal police memo detailing the incident, the police are working diligently to track down the white Mercedes Benz responsible for the officer’s death. The Command has assured the public that all necessary resources are being deployed to bring the perpetrator to justice.
